SAINT ROSE RALLIES TO UPEND #10 STONEHILL 70-68

Senior center Lauren Revesz
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose rallied from a 10-point second half deficit to upend visiting 10th-ranked Stonehill 70-68 in Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. Senior guard Dana Brown knocked down three straight jumpers throughout the final 2:34 and sophomore guard Lynsey Timbrouck canned a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining to lead the charge.

The Golden Knights (10-7/5-7 NE-10) have now defeated a ranked opponent in Albany in each of the past three seasons. Meanwhile, the Skyhawks (14-3/9-3 NE-10) have dropped two of their last three games after winning their previous nine.

Brown scored 13 of her game-high 23 points in the second half, while senior center Lauren Revesz  finished with 20 points, on 8-for-12 shooting, and eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Amy Voelkel went 3-for-5 from the arc on the way to nine points and five boards in 30 minutes off the bench.

A jumper by freshman guard Ashley Rath afforded Saint Rose its first lead of the second half, 60-59, with 5:17 to go and a Revesz put-back off a missed 3-pointer made it 62-61 Golden Knights a minute later. Brown extended the lead to three, 64-61, with the first of her three consecutive jumpers, but Stonehill scored five unanswered points to go up a bucket, 66-64, with 1:30 showing on the clock.

Brown then came through again by sandwiching two more jumpers around a Stonehill turnover that put Saint Rose on top 68-66 with 31 ticks left. On the next trip, senior forward Bethany Tighe's 3-pointer from the left wing rattled out with 11 seconds to go and the Skyhawks were thus forced to foul. Timbrouck nullified the strategy by hitting her two free throws, including the second following a timeout. Stonehill sophomore guard Kristen McWhirter closed out the scoring with an uncontested layup in the final second.

Junior center Kelsey Simonds led the Skyhawks with 18 points. McWhirter wound up with 17 points, on 7-for-11 shooting, and nine caroms; while sophomore guard Emily Rousseau had 14 points and a game-high six assists.

The first half had a similar feel as the Golden Knights outscored the Skyhawks 18-10 during the final 7:49 that whittled an 11 point, 28-17, deficit to a three point, 38-35, disadvantage at the break. Stonehill resumed control in the opening stages of the second period, but the Golden Knights kept it close enough to make a final decisive run.

In upcoming action, both teams have 5:30 pm league games on tap for Tuesday. Saint Rose will head to North Andover, MA to meet Merrimack; while Stonehill will face Pace University in Pleasantville.
