ALBANY – Junior All-American Gabriela Demoner found the back of the net from the top of the penalty box with just over 15 minutes to play to lead #17 Franklin Pierce University past The College of Saint Rose this afternoon at Albany Academies East Campus. The lone tally also ended the 15th-ranked Golden Knights (4-2/2-1 NE-10) 16-game unbeaten streak in Northeast-10 Conference regular season action.
“We played quite well, especially in the first half when we were able to control midfield. It was a great goal by Demoner because she was able to push it past a defender. It was just one of those that just dips by the goalkeeper. From our angle, it didn't look as if it had a chance to go in,” said Franklin Pierce head coach Jeff Bailey.
Demoner collected the ball in the middle of the pitch from 25-yards out, made a series of flashy moves to create some space and ripped a shot from the top of the box that ended up just under the outstretched hands of Saint Rose junior keeper
Shannon Murphy in the 75th minute to provide the Ravens (4-1-1/2-0-1 NE-10) with a 1-0 cushion.
The Golden Knights continued to apply pressure throughout the final 11 minutes, firing four of their 12 shots in the contest. Sophomore forward
Jazmine Farrell had a chance in the 82nd minute, but Franklin Pierce senior keeper Brittany Ester was there to make the save.
Trying to afford Saint Rose one last breath, senior forward
Kailey Egbert broke laterally to her right through the Ravens defense and blasted a shot that sailed just wide of the far post with 4:31 to play. From that point on, Franklin Pierce was able to play its corners and keep the Golden Knights off the board.
Murphy played all 90 minutes between the posts and collected four saves, while Ester registered her first clean sheet of the season on the strength of five stops.
Both teams resume action Saturday. Saint Rose will play the first of three straight road matches with a 3:00 pm date at league foe Bentley, while Franklin Pierce visits Southern Connecticut State for a 7:00 pm NE-10 meeting in New Haven.
