NEW HAVEN – The College of Saint Rose scored twice within an 11-minute span midway through the second half to chalk up a 2-1 victory at Southern Connecticut State this evening. It marked the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both squads. The Golden Knights (3-1/1-0 NE-10) have now recorded three straight shutouts after dropping their season debut to #10 C.W. Post.
Saint Rose controlled play for the majority of the contest by outshooting the host Owls (2-1/0-1 NE-10) 12-5 and generating five corner kicks, and allowing three.
However, it was the Owls who made the first mark. Southern Connecticut took a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute when senior forward Gina Della Rose converted a feed from junior midfielder Katrina Cook.
Saint Rose squared the game seven minutes later when senior forward
Kailey Egbert knocked home a rebound after Southern sophomore keeper Katie DiDio could not hang on to an initial strike by sophomore midfielder
Amanda Deck. Deck then provided the difference in the 70th minute by tallying her second consecutive game-winner.
Junior keeper
Shannon Murphy came up with three saves for the Golden Knights, while DiDio turned aside six shots-on-goal for the Owls.
Saint Rose will don the home whites for the first time on Saturday when league rival Southern New Hampshire visits. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm at The Albany Academies. Meanwhile, Southern Connecticut will visit NE-10 foe UMass Lowell on Saturday. That game is scheduled for 1:00 pm as well.
