FLUSHING, NY – The College of Saint Rose could not capitalize on a pair of excellent opportunities in the second half, which allowed host Queens College to chalk up a 1-0 victory in the season-opener for both clubs this afternoon.
Senior forward
Joe Hunt had both chances for the Golden Knights (0-1). Hunt ripped a shot off the crossbar in the 67th minute that ricocheted away, and then he had a header turned back by Queens (1-0) sophomore keeper Brian Brabazon with less than seven minutes remaining.
Queens struck midway through the first half to put itself in control at that juncture. Senior forward Noorullah Mashriqi found the back of the net in the 23rd minute for what held up as the game-winner. Mashriqi gathered a ball that deflected off of the back of teammate and senior midfielder Johnny Osorio and headed it home.
Queens outshot Saint Rose 8-4 throughout the opening period, but the Golden Knights picked up the pressure throughout the game's latter stages to throw a scare into their hosts. Freshman keeper
Patrik Ohlsson turned aside six shots on goal for the Golden Knights in his collegiate debut, while Brabazon came up with eight saves for Queens.
Saint Rose will play its home opener on Monday when NYIT visits for a non-conference match. Kickoff is set for 4:00 pm at the University at Albany. Meanwhile, Queens will host Assumption on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
