ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's soccer team will embark on its 2008 postseason run on Sunday when the second-seeded Golden Knights host seventh-seeded New Haven at 1:00 pm in a Northeast-10 Conference Quarterfinal match-up at Albany Academies East Campus.
Saint Rose, who climbed back into Tuesday's
NSCAA/Adidas NCAA II poll as the 25th-ranked club after a month long absence, is coming off a 3-1 victory versus Pace University to clinch a share of its third straight NE-10 regular season title. In the process, the Golden Knights won their ninth consecutive game.
Sunday's match with New Haven (9-9-1) comes just eight days after the teams met in a regular season league match at Albany Academy. Saint Rose freshman midfielder
Christina Cuffari did most of the damage by tallying twice and senior forward
Kailey Egbert fired the game winner just 1:22 after the Chargers tied the game to lead the Golden Knights to a 3-1 victory.
Saint Rose (14-3-1) has taken two straight meetings between the two clubs and has outscored New Haven 9-1 in those contests. The Golden Knights, who have appeared in the conference tournament every year since joining the league at the outset of the 2000 campaign, have been impressive at home by outscoring their opponents 18-3 to account for a 6-1-0 record.
Sophomore forward
Jazmine Farrell leads a balanced scoring attack where 21 players on the roster of 28 have at least one point. Farrell has six goals and three assists, while Egbert and Cuffari have registered five goals and three assists each. Additionally, freshman forward Gianna D'Errico has 11 points behind five goals and one assist for the third-ranked scoring offense in the NE-10.
Defensively, Saint Rose is ranked 28th in the country (Division II) having surrendered 14 goals in 18 games for a 0.77 goals-against-average. The Golden Knights pace the league with 10 shutouts, which represents the 18th-highest total in NCAA II.
Junior keeper
Shannon Murphy spearheads the defensive unit behind a 0.62 GAA, 37 saves and four shutouts. She owns a 12-2-1 mark between the posts and the second-best save percentage (.822) in the league.
New Haven possesses one of the top scoring threats in the conference in senior forward Selina Moylan. Moylan ranks second in the NE-10 with 36 points behind 15 goals and six assists. Furthermore, she was credited with the lone tally for the Chargers in last Saturday's 3-1 loss to Saint Rose via a free kick from 25-yards out. Meanwhile, sophomore forward Holly Dawson has registered 13 points. Freshman keeper Kim Taylor has played all but 12:07 during her rookie campaign, which has included 19 starts. She is third among NE-10 keepers with 82 saves to go with a 1.62 GAA and two shutouts.
The winner of Sunday's contest will advance to Thursday's semifinal round that will be hosted by the higher remaining seeds. Third-seed Merrimack takes on sixth-seed UMass Lowell in the bracket's other quarterfinal match-up at 1:00 pm Sunday in North Andover, MA.
Admission to the game will be $6 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and children and free for Saint Rose students, faculty and staff with a valid ID card.
