CUFFARI AND EGBERT POWER SAINT ROSE PAST NEW HAVEN 3-1

Freshman Christina Cuffari
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's soccer team won its ninth straight on the strength of two second half goals en route to a 3-1 Northeast-10 Conference victory versus the University of New Haven this afternoon. With the win, the Golden Knights (13-3-1/10-2-1 NE-10) remained tied for first in the league standings with one regular season contest remaining.

On “Senior Day” at Albany Academy, it was freshman midfielder Christina Cuffari that did most of the damage with two strikes in the game. Meanwhile, senior forward Kailey Egbert continued to lead by example after driving home her fifth marker of the year 1:22 after the Chargers knotted the game at 1-1.

Cuffari got things going in the 42nd minute for Saint Rose. She collected the ball on the left corner of the penalty box and ripped a shot from 20-yards that was mishandled by New Haven freshman keeper Kim Taylor.

The Chargers (9-8-1/7-6 NE-10) applied early pressure in the second half that paid off in the 61st minute. Senior midfielder Selina Moylan, who ranks second in the NE-10 in scoring, buried a free kick from 25-yards out that found the top shelf, thus tying the game 1-1.

Egbert wasted no time finding an answer. Sophomore fullback Kelly Guerin lobbed a ball over the New Haven defense that found Egbert in space. Egbert managed to break free and beat Taylor far post for what held up as the game-winner.

Cuffari then added an insurance goal in the 81st on a play that was started by a sound defensive play from sophomore fullback Katie Whiting. Whiting stole the ball from Moylan in the middle third of the field and chipped the ball to Cuffari, who broke down the left side and fired a shot that beat Taylor near post to close out the scoring.

The Golden Knights held a 16-6 advantage in shots and generated eight corner kicks on the afternoon. Murphy finished with two saves, while Taylor stopped seven shots for the Chargers.

Saint Rose is scheduled to close out its NE-10 regular season slate on Tuesday when the Golden Knights host Pace University. Kickoff is set for 3:45 pm at Albany Academy. New Haven will conclude its first season of league competition on Tuesday when Southern Connecticut State visits the Chargers for a 3:00 pm contest.
