ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose men's lacrosse team beat the University of Bridgeport 21-5 in the Golden Knights' home-opener at Sullivan Field. Saint Rose moves to 1-1 with the victory.
Senior attackman
Cam Smith lead the way for Saint Rose scoring six goals on the afternoon, with the first of his three strikes coming in a first quarter hat trick. With the six goals, Smith eclipsed the 100-goal mark in a Saint Rose uniform.
Saint Rose took a 9-5 lead into halftime and did not give up a goal in the second half. Goalies
Ryan Gainor and
Dom Zichelli made two saves each for the Golden Knights.
Sophomore attackman
Noah Gibson added a hat trick of his own for Saint Rose, as well as dishing out two assists.
The Golden Knights used a combination of
Eoghan Sweeney (16-of-19) and
Danny Bezrutchenko (6-of-9) to win the face off battle over the Purple Knights by a 22-8 margin.
Graduate attackman
Greg Walsh provided two goals and a game high three assists for the Golden Knights. Freshman attackman
Alex Johanson scored in his second game in a row, notching two fourth-quarter goals while also adding an assist on goal scored by defenseman
Michael Castelli.
Jackson Spikereit,
Jack Rice,
West Cateaux,
Brady Frys and
Mike Mrzyglod were five different Golden Knights that finished the game with a goal and an assist each.
Saint Rose used 11 different goal scorers to reach their 21 goals. They finished the game on a 12-0 run over the final 31 minutes.
The Golden Knights will be back at home on Sullivan Field on Sunday, February 25th at 12:00 pm for a non-conference matchup versus Post University.
