DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose came back from a 6-2 halftime deficit to get within two goals in the fourth period, before falling 11-8 at fourth-ranked Mercy College today.
Junior attackmen
Cam Smith and
Eddie Baker scored three goals apiece, and fifth-year attack
Brendan Sheedy had a goal and a pair of assists to pace the Golden Knights (1-1) offense. Junior midfielder
Gabriel Nish accounted for the other goal.
Meanwhile, junior
Christian Hunt recorded six saves during the game's initial 19:29, while his classmate
Ryan Fleming made 13 stops over the final 40:31.
Saint Rose kept its composure out of intermission as Nish and Sheedy struck two minutes apart in the opening four minutes of the third quarter to make it 7-4 Mercy.
Baker then converted a feed from fifth-year midfielder
John Loughlin in a man-up situation with 4:22 to go in the third to make it 9-6. Baker struck again with 7:54 left in the fourth to get Saint Rose to within two, 9-7, and Smith scored with 2:35 remaining to make it 10-8, but that is as close as the Golden Knights could get against the defending East Coast Conference champions.
Graduate student attack Dominic Scorcia and senior midfielder Jack Gibbons scored three goals apiece to lead the Mavericks (1-0).
Looking ahead, Saint Rose will play its home opener next Saturday versus Georgian Court at 1:00 pm. Meanwhile, Mercy will host the Lions on Tuesday at 2:30 pm.
