ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – Junior attack
Eddie Baker scored the game-winner off a feed from junior midfielder
Gabriel Nish with a mere 1:02 remaining in overtime to propel The College of Saint Rose to a 12-11 win in today's season-opener at Molloy.
Â
In the process, the Golden Knights (1-0) delivered the first head coaching victory for
Alex Williams who made his sideline debut this afternoon.
"Today was a total team effort. It was great to see us continue to battle and fight, but most importantly stay together through adversity," said Williams.
Saint Rose displayed a sense of resiliency all afternoon by bouncing back from a 6-3, third period deficit behind six unanswered strikes. The Golden Knights also hung tough after the Lions (0-2) deadlocked it 10-10 with 6:52 remaining and forced the extra session by making it 11-11 with a mere two ticks showing on the clock.
Â
Baker filled up the box with four goals, a pair of assists, four groundballs, and two caused turnovers to help Saint Rose win the second season-opener in the program's 11-year history.
Â
Fifth-year attack
Brendan Sheedy scored three goals and set up another, while Nish twice found the back of the net and helped design two more. Junior attack
Cam Smith added a pair of goals, and fellow junior attack
Anthony Barone had a goal. Freshman midfielder
Brady Frys provided a pair of helpers.
Â
In addition, sophomore midfielder
Luke Pemrick caused three Lions (0-2) miscues and picked up an assist. Sophomore defenseman
Walter Ross scooped up five groundballs, and fifth year midfielder
John Loughlin came away with four. Between the posts, junior
Christian Hunt recorded 16 saves to register his first win in a Golden Knights uniform.
Â
For Molloy, sophomore midfielder Chris Delaney scored three goals and freshman attack Bryan Dilberto struck twice. Freshman goalie Christian Michaels recorded 16 saves, including three in overtime when the Golden Knights manufactured a 5-0 shot advantage.
Â
Overall, Saint Rose generated a 28-27 shot-on-goal and a 37-28 groundball differential.
Â
Looking ahead, both teams return to action Saturday. The Golden Knights have a 1:00 pm meeting at #5 Mercy College, while the Lions have a noon home date versus Saint Michael's.
