WORCESTER, Mass. – The College of Saint Rose buried an NCAA era school record 17, 3-pointers and held off host Assumption to prevail 83-81 in Northeast-10 Conference action tonight.
Â
The Greyhounds got to within the final margin after sophomore forward Cooper Creek buried a shot from the arc with three seconds left. However, they could not get another attempt off after fouling intentionally out of the ensuing timeout.
Â
Prior to that, freshman guard
Tray Alexander was fouled while pulling down a rebound off his own miss. He converted his two free throws to make it a five point, 83-78, ballgame with 12 seconds left.
Â
The Golden Knights (8-7/5-5 NE10) led throughout the first half and boosted their advantage to 16 points, 49-33, after sophomore forward
Eric Fleming opened the second period with a dunk.
Â
Assumption then scored 29 of the game's ensuing 40 points to go up a pair, 62-60, when senior forward Omari El Sheikh finished inside and fellow senior forward David Tiedemann drained a 3-pointer with 9:58 remaining.
Â
Saint Rose countered with 11 unanswered points to gain a nine point, 71-62 lead. Senior forward
Kevin Lynch knocked down a 3-pointer, fifth year guard
Adam Anderson flushed a dunk, Alexander canned one from deep, and Anderson hit from long range himself to account for the two-minute jaunt.
Â
The Greyhounds again refused to go quietly though. Graduate student Matthew Kelly and sophomore guard Njavan Stewart knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to get Assumption to within six, 71-68, with 6:41 remaining.
It remained a one or two possession affair the rest of the way.
Â
"I was super proud of our team tonight. We really shot the ball well by making 11, threes in the first half and we were able to get enough stops down the stretch to secure the win.
Tray Alexander made a huge play at the end of the game by getting his own rebound off of a miss and then knocking down two huge free throws. We are now looking forward to another road test this weekend at Stonehill," said head coach
Mike Perno.
Â
Overall, Saint Rose shot a season-high 54.9 percent (17-for-31) from deep and converted 11 Assumption turnovers into 19 points.
Â
Anderson tied his career-high with seven 3-pointers and Alexander knocked down a career-best six to pace four Golden Knights in twin-figures with 23 and 22 points respectively. Alexander also handed out eight assists. Freshman forward
Shane O'Dell finished with 16 points and Fleming went 5-fo-6 from the floor on the way to a 10-point effort.
Â

Â
Looking ahead, both teams have 3:30 pm road conference dates Saturday. The Golden Knights are scheduled to travel to North Easton, Mass. to meet Stonehill, while the Greyhounds head west to Syracuse to take on Le Moyne.
