SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - After not playing for more than 500 days, The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball program made its long-awaited return to the court tonight at American International. The young Golden Knights, playing four freshmen and two sophomores in their nine-player rotation, fell to the host Yellow Jackets 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-20).
Junior defensive specialist
Megan Mayer,
the Northeast-10 Conference Elite 24 Award Winner, led Saint Rose with six kills, two blocks, and eight digs. Sophomore setter
Valeria Jorge passed out nine assists, while freshman defensive specialist
Michelle Park also totaled eight digs.
American International (3-0) received 20 kills on .581 hitting and eight digs from junior outside hitter Andrea Serra-Rosa. Sophomore setter Naomi Eckert-Rivera contributed 32 assists and six digs.
"We are using the abbreviated spring season to learn and grow from each other and our weaknesses," said Head Coach
Vanessa Volpe-Rivera. "Competitions against strong opponents like AIC will help our underclassmen gain experience and confidence as we go into the fall."
The Yellow Jackets, which reached the 2019 NE10 Tournament Championship Game, started the match by taking 11 of the first 16 points. Down 22-15, the Golden Knights made a late rally to get the deficit to four at 24-20 before falling. After AIC hit .320 to take the second frame, Saint Rose battled hard in the third set, which featured six ties, in an attempt to extend the tilt. Trailing 15-10, the Golden Knights used a 9-3 jaunt to take the lead. However American International responded on a 7-1 run of its own to complete the sweep.
Â
Looking ahead, Saint Rose (0-1) is scheduled to play at Georgian Court on Saturday. The match is slated to begin at 6:00 pm. Meanwhile, AIC is scheduled to host Bentley on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
