ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose pounded out 13 hits and took advantage of clutch pitching to win the series finale 9-3 today versus Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival Pace University at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Â
Eight different players figured in the hitting attack while junior right-hander
Frankie Pizzo stranded three runners at third base en route to his first win in a Golden Knights (8-18/4-10 NE10) uniform. He got some monumental help from fellow junior right-hander
Nicholas Zuba who came on in the sixth with no outs and a pair of runners in scoring position. He promptly retired three straight to preserve a volatile 4-1 Saint Rose lead.
Â
"Today was a great team win with a lot of different players contributing at the plate and in the field.
Frankie Pizzo showed his toughness on the mound and reliever
Nicholas Zuba worked out of a huge jam to hold the lead. Our team responded today and showed what we are capable of. We're looking to carry the momentum into next week," said head coach
Wayne Jones.
Â
Saint Rose broke open the game in the seventh when it sent nine batters to the plate. Sophomore outfielder
Stephan MacMeans smacked a two-run base hit to center and junior catcher
Jon Montesanti scored another pair with a double to right-center to account for most of the damage.
Â
Pizzo wound up allowing a run throughout 5.0 innings of work, while Zuba tossed 2.0 frames of shutout, one-hit ball out of the bullpen. Senior designated hitter
Nicolas Teitter finished 2-for-5 with a run scored to run his hit streak to six games.
Â
Looking ahead, both squads are back on the diamond Tuesday for key divisional games. The Golden Knights head to Springfield to face American International, while the Setters host Adelphi.
