PACE HOLDS OFF GOLDEN KNIGHTS

ALBANY-Pace University started quick and withstood a flurry by The College of Saint Rose to upend the Golden Knights 11-8 in Northeast-10 Conference action tonight at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

The game was evenly played and featured a pair of lead changes and two ties throughout an eight minute span in the second quarter. The Setters (8-5/4-4 NE-10) engineered a slight 32-30 shot advantage while sophomore specialist Lucas Frese and freshman midfielder Nicolas Johnson won 13-of-23 face-offs for Saint Rose (3-11/1-8 NE-10).

Sophomore attack Evan Doherty scored four goals, senior midfielder Mike Balla had a pair of strikes and an assist, and sophomore attack Matt Graham  finished with a goal and two helpers to propel the Golden Knights attack. Sophomore midfielder Connor Moore also had a pair of assists including his single-season school record 21st.

Balla also caused a pair of Setters miscues as did senior defenseman Robert Reyes.

Saint Rose put itself in arrears early with a 3-1 deficit before Balla, Doherty, and Graham struck less than two minutes apart early in the second quarter to afford the Golden Knights a 4-3 lead. However, Pace countered with three straight to put itself up 6-4 at intermission.

Saint Rose twice got to one throughout the opening seven minutes of the third, including after Johnson won a face-off and streaked up the middle before depositing his first collegiate goal that made it a 7-6 affair.

However, the Setters settled in and outscored the Golden Knights 4-2 the rest of the way to improve to 5-1 on the road this season. Sophomore attack Anthony Gadaleta and Liam Brennan each scored four goals to lead their charge.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are back home next Saturday, April 23 for a 1:00 pm meeting with NE-10 rival Franklin Pierce. Meanwhile, Pace has a 7:00 pm conference date at Bentley in Waltham, MA on Wednesday.
