GOLDEN KNIGHTS SWEEP NE-10 RIVAL SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

NEW HAVEN–The College of Saint Rose scored twice in the seventh inning of the opener and withstood a furious last inning rally by host Southern Connecticut State in the finale to sweep the Owls, 6-3 and 9-7, in Northeast-10 Conference action today.

Sophomore third baseman Jadyn Costello went 3-for-4, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice herself, while senior right fielder Tina Karaqi doubled and also recorded a pair of RBI to lead the Golden Knights (6-13/2-3 NE-10) game-one attack. Senior right-hander Nicole Wickham allowed three runs on six hits over the distance to pick up her third win this spring.

Saint Rose built 3-2 and 4-2 leads before Southern Connecticut State (5-12/0-2 NE-10) freshman shortstop Catherine Ursillo drove a two out, solo home run over the left field fence in the sixth to make it a 4-3 ballgame. Wickham then worked out of a jam with runners on second and third.

Junior left fielder Carly Wood hit a solo shot to left center in the seventh for her third hit of the game and Karaqi doubled to bring across Costello with the Golden Knights sixth run. Wickham subsequently induced a pair of pop ups and a fly out to lock down the victory.

In the nightcap, Saint Rose pushed across a run in each of the first four frames and added three more in the sixth and a pair in the seventh to take a 9-2 lead, but the Owls scored five times in their half of the seventh to fuel some drama. Wickham came on and surrendered a walk to the first batter she faced to load the bases, but retired the next batter to pick up the save and allow the Golden Knights to complete the sweep.

Senior catcher Zoe Dubois went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored, senior shortstop Danielle Brusca finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Wood went 2-for-4 and drove home a pair for Saint Rose.

Meanwhile, Ursillo finished 4-for-6 with three extra-base hits and a pair of RBI throughout the day for Southern Connecticut State.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights have a 2:30 pm non-conference double dip at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry on Tuesday. The Owls meanwhile are back on the diamond Monday with a home non-league twin-blll versus Dowling.
