GOLDEN KNIGHTS HANG TOUGH BEFORE #6 ADELPHI PULLS AWAY

GARDEN CITY, NY-The College of Saint Rose kept itself within striking distance before host and sixth ranked Adelphi pulled away in the second half to upend the Golden Knights 13-7 in their Northeast-10 Conference opener this afternoon.

Saint Rose was within one, 6-5, at intermission, but the Panthers (4-1/2-0 NE-10) outscored the Golden Knights (2-3/0-1 NE-10) 7-2 throughout the final 30 minutes.

Adelphi won 19 of 23 faceoff opportunities, including all five in the fourth quarter, which helped it produce a 45-25 shot advantage.

Sophomore attack Matt Graham had two goals and an assist, while junior midfielder Josh Frese scored twice as well for Saint Rose. Additionally, senior midfielder Mike Balla contributed a goal and an assist while sophomore midfielder Connor Moore set up a pair of strikes.

Freshman goalie Liam Guiton recorded a season-high 16 saves, while senior midfielder Jon Munroe and senior defenseman Robert Reyes each grabbed five groundballs.

The Panthers got off to a fast start by opening up a 4-0 lead midway through the first period. Saint Rose kept its composure though and tallied four of the next five strikes to get within one, 5-4, with 1:00 to go in the second after junior midfielder Michael Tannenbaum set up senior midfielder Bobby Primo.

The two squads subsequently traded goals 24 seconds apart to head into the break. It was still a two goal affair, 8-6, when Balla fed Graham for the latter's team-leading 11th goal of the year with 5:10 remaining in the third.

Adelphi then scored three unanswered times to put itself in the driver's seat behind an 11-6 cushion with 7:17 to go in the game.

Balla and Graham both struck in the final four minutes of the first to cut the Golden Knights early deficit in half. After the Panthers got one back, Frese found the back of the net in a man-up situation and then Primo struck to make it 5-4 Adelphi.

Senior attack Cory Stavis scored seven goals and freshman attack Gordon Purdie, Jr. finished with four to lead the Panthers who have now outscored their opponents 67-31 during their current four-game win streak.

For Saint Rose, Graham has now recorded three straight multi-goal games while Moore has eight assists during that same span.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are home Wednesday with a 4:30 pm non-league meeting with #13 Molloy. Meanwhile, the Panthers have a 4:00 pm conference date at Assumption in Worcester, MA on Tuesday.
