STRONG START NOT ENOUGH AS SAINT ROSE FALLS TO #11 MERCYHUST IN SEASON-OPENER

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to forge a tie, but Mercyhurst scored four unanswered goals to upend the Golden Knights 7-3 in their season-opener today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

Saint Rose (0-1) won nine of 14 faceoff opportunities although the Lakers (2-0), who are ranked No. 11 in the USILA Division II Poll, manufactured a 23-17 shot differential.

Sophomore attacks Matt Graham and Evan Doherty, and junior midfielder Michael Tannenbaum accounted for the three Saint Rose goals. Freshman long stick midfielder Jordan Fredericks and sophomore midfielder Connor Moore each picked up an assist, while freshman goalie Liam Guiton made eight saves.

Furthermore, senior defenseman Colin Stewart caused three turnovers while sophomore specialist Lucas Frese won six of his eight faceoff opportunities.

Junior attack Derek Richards scored a pair of goals and set up two others to spearhead the Lakers attack.

Mercyhurst got off to strong start by striking twice in the opening five minutes before Doherty and Tannenbaum scored 1:04 apart to deadlock it 2-2 with 5:18 left in the first quarter. Junior attack James Crowe then scored unassisted with a mere nine ticks left to afford the Lakers a 3-2 advantage after one.

Sophomore attack Colin Greenway then accounted for the lone second period strike and senior attack Connor Enright scored the lone goal in the third to make it 5-2 Lakers.

Graham then found the back of the net in the opening five minutes of the fourth to get Saint Rose to within 6-3, before Mercyhurst junior midfielder Brett Benzinger scored the game's final tally with 2:43 showing on the clock.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are home again Friday for a 3:00 pm date with Mercy College. Meanwhile, the Lakers have a 1:00 pm meeting next Saturday at Wheeling Jesuit in Wheeling, WV.
