BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose softball team dropped its third contest in a row Friday afternoon at Pace Field as the Setters'  senior Natalie Gellos cranked out a two-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the eighth to give Pace a 6-5 win and a Northeast-10 Conference series sweep.
The Golden Knights (8-13 overall, 3-5 in the NE-10) held a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, but Gellos and freshman Ashley Lew registered RBI singles for Pace (14-6, 6-3), and held Saint Rose scoreless in the sixth to force extra innings.
The Setters nabbed one run in the both the first and second innings to hold a 2-0 advantage, but Saint Rose picked up four tallies in the fourth to take the two-run lead.
With runners on second and third, and two outs, senior Anna Carey dished out a two RBI single to center. Freshman Katie Shevlin entered to pinch run for Carey, and moved to second as junior Rachel Waseleski reached on a throwing error. The Golden Knights loaded up the bases as senior Marisa Bird singled to center. Junior Danielle Brusca stepped to the plate next, ripping a RBI single to right, and advancing to second on a fielding error from right fielder Tara Bernstein, giving Shevlin and Waseleski time to scoot home.
In the top of the eighth, senior Kari Bird led off the inning with a walk, and moved to second off a sacrifice bunt from Carey. Bird (Kari) eventually scored on a RBI single from Bird (Marisa).
Bird (Marisa) led the Golden Knights offensively with a 2-for-3 effort, followed by Carey at 1-for-2 and two RBI.
From the circle, junior Nicole Wickham (5-6) suffered the loss after entering in the sixth. Senior Ashlee Frazier earned the start, throwing 4.2 innings as she allowed seven hits and four runs, three of them earned.
Saint Rose returns to the diamond on Monday as it hosts Mercy starting at 2:30 pm at Cathy Haker Field. The Golden Knights return to NE-10 play on Tuesday as they head to Le Moyne. First pitch is slated for 3:00 pm. Â
