WILLIAMS, BIRD AID IN WINS OVER MERCY

ALBANY – Senior Alexis Williams' two RBI homer and a 4-for-6 performance at the plate from senior Kari Bird, aided in a two-game sweep of Mercy College Monday afternoon for The College of Saint Rose softball team, with scores of 7-1 in 7-4 from Cathy Haker Field.

The Mavericks (4-22 overall) got on the board first in both games, but Saint Rose (10-13) nailed down three big innings throughout the day to come away with both wins.

After a scoreless first inning in game two, Mercy notched a run in the second off a RBI single to right from sophomore Aneecia Powell. The Golden Knights answered with a three-run spurt in the bottom of the inning, starting with junior Taylor Snyder's leadoff single to left. Snyder was out at second on the next play when junior Zoe DuBois reached on a fielder's choice to third.

Senior Marisa Bird stepped to the plate next, and let a pitch go by, giving DuBois a chance to steal second. Bird ended up singling to second, DuBois advanced to third, and was sent home off a RBI single to left from junior Rachel Waseleski.

During freshman Katie Shevlin's next at-bat, Bird (Marisa) and Waseleski and stole second and third, respectively, and then moved up another base on a throwing error from catcher Amanda Gardiner. Bird (Kari) stepped up next and captured her third hit of the day with a RBI single to short.

Both teams tacked on single runs in the fourth, with Mercy gaining its on a sacrifice fly to left from sophomore Katrina Golino, and a RBI single from sophomore Carly Wood for Saint Rose.

In the sixth, Snyder captured her redemption from earlier by ripping a RBI single to short with two runners on. She would later be driven home, along with DuBois, as freshman Taylor Solomon cranked out a single to left, sending both runners home.

The Mavericks mustered one run in three different innings throughout the game, but they would not be enough to combat the deficit put up by the Golden Knights.

Senior Ashlee Frazier (1-1) picked up her first win of the season in the circle, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing eight hits and three runs, two of them earned, while striking out four. Junior Danielle Dayton threw the final inning, giving up just one hit and one run.

In game one, tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the first with two outs and one on, Williams went deep in the count before cranking out her first home run of the season over the left field fence. Her two-run shot gave Saint Rose a 3-1 lead.

The Golden Knights tacked on single runs in the third and fifth off RBI singles from Bird (Kari) and DuBois, respectively. A pair of insurance runs were picked up in the sixth off another Bird (Kari) hit. The New Rochelle, N.Y., native singled to right center with runners on second and third, and was later left on base off a groundout that ended the inning.

Collecting her sixth win of the season, junior Nicole Wickham (6-7) threw a complete game while allowing only four hits and fanning seven batters.

Bird (Kari) led from the plate, followed by Wood with a 5-for-8 performance and two RBI.

The Golden Knights head to Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne on Tuesday for an Upstate Challenge meeting starting at 3:00 pm, and return home on Wednesday to host Saint Michael's. First pitch is slated for 3:00 pm.
