DOMINICAN HOLDS OFF GOLDEN KNIGHTS

ALBANY–Dominican scored three times in the eighth to rally from an 8-6 deficit and then halted threats by The College of Saint Rose in both the eighth and ninth innings to upend the Golden Knights 9-8 in non-conference action this afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field. The game was a see-saw affair with the two teams exchanging the lead four times.

Junior left fielder Nick Venier went 3-for-4 while senior right fielder Joseph Carcone, junior center fielder Derek Reed, senior catcher Zac Bellinger and senior designated hitter Lukas Nethaway all finished with two hits apiece for the Golden Knights (8-21). Also, sophomore second baseman Tyler Ungerland had an RBI double in the sixth.

Saint Rose scored four runs in the seventh to take an 8-6 lead thanks to a leadoff triple off the bat of freshman third Alec Caprarella and RBI doubles by freshman shortstop Bray Curreri, Reed and Bellinger.

However, the Chargers (18-20) responded with their three-run-eighth that ultimately put themselves ahead to stay. They loaded the bases with none out, before senior shortstop Robert Alonso brought across all three runs with a double down the left field line.

The Golden Knights then loaded the bases themselves with none down in the home half of the eighth, and also put runners on second and third with no outs in the ninth, but Dominican worked itself out of both jams to win its seventh game in its last nine outings.

Sophomore center fielder Jonathan Martinez finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles out of the leadoff spot, and sophomore third baseman Donald Crispyn finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI for the Chargers.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home Tuesday to face Upstate Challenge and Northeast -10 Conference rival Le Moyne. That game is scheduled to be streamed live on www.gogoldenknights.tv. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm. Meanwhile, Dominican has a 7:00 pm home game versus Bloomfield this Thursday.
