GOLDEN KNIGHTS HOLD OFF SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE TO EARN A SPLIT

NEW HAVEN–The College of Saint Rose held off Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival Southern Connecticut State in the finale to gain a split in today's doubleheader. The Golden Knights grabbed a 2-1 win in the nightcap on the heels of a 7-6 setback in the opener.

In the second game, the Owls (17-18/9-10 NE-10) pushed one across and had the tying run on third in the ninth, but junior right-hander Ryan Harper induced a foul out to polish off an impressive performance for Saint Rose (8-20/5-11 NE-10). Harper allowed just seven hits and fanned five over the distance to go to 5-3 on the year.

Sophomore third baseman Mike Flynn went 3-for-4 and senior catcher Zac Bellinger finished 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Golden Knights offense.

Harper and Southern Connecticut State senior right-hander A.J. Turnier posted nothing but zeroes until the eighth when the Golden Knights went up 2-0. An Ungerland RBI base hit brought across Bellinger and senior designated hitter Lukas Nethaway hit a sacrifice fly that scored senior left fielder Nick Venier, who had reached on an error two batters earlier.

Harper then put the Owls down in order in the eighth and muscled his way through the ninth.

In the matinee, Saint Rose rallied from a 5-1 deficit by scoring once in the sixth and three times in the seventh to tie it 5-5.  Southern Connecticut State then scored twice in the bottom half of the seventh on a two-run triple off the bat of senior second baseman Nick Baviello. Saint Rose got one back an inning later thanks to an RBI ground out by Flynn, but the Golden Knights could not advance the potential tying run from third.

Venier and Flynn finished with two hits apiece, while senior right fielder Joseph Carcone drove a two-run double down the right field line and junior center fielder Derek Reed lined an RBI base hit up the middle to account for the three runs in the seventh.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home tomorrow to host Dominican in a non-league game at Bob Bellizzi Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Owls have a 3:30 pm home date with division rival Adelphi on Tuesday.
