SAINT ROSE DROPS SERIES OPENER AT SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

NEW HAVEN–The College of Saint Rose did not go quietly, but host Southern Connecticut State scored in each of the first five innings to upend the Golden Knights 11-4 in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game today.

Senior first baseman Zac Bellinger went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI to extend his hit streak to 12 games while raising his average to a team best .376 (35-for-93) on the year. He is now seventh among the league's leading hitters. Also, junior center fielder Derek Reed had an RBI double and senior designated hitter Lukas Nethaway belted a solo home run that cleared the right field fence in the fifth.

The Owls (16-17/8-9 NE-10) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and following Nethaway's homer, pushed across four more runs in the fifth to make it a 10-1 ballgame. The Golden Knights (7-19/4-10 NE-10) then scored three times in the seventh, before Southern added another in its own half to close out the scoring.

Freshman outfielder Sean Maki drew a pinch hit, leadoff walk; senior second baseman Ryan Hooker got hit and senior right fielder Joseph Carcone reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners. Reed then drove a shot to the gap in left-center that scored Maki. Bellinger subsequently brought around Reed and Carcone with a base hit to left field to account for the three run, seventh.

For the Owls; junior catcher Jake Lieberman, senior second baseman Nick Baviello, and junior right fielder Alex Wichmann had two hits apiece.

Looking ahead, these two teams are scheduled to conclude their weekend series tomorrow with a 12:00 pm doubleheader in New Haven.
