GOLDEN KNIGHTS UPENDED AT AIC

BELLINGER EXTENDS HIT STREAK TO 11 GAMES

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.–The College of Saint Rose got out to a 2-0 lead only to have host American International score 12 runs throughout the fifth and sixth innings during today's 16-4 loss to the Yellow Jackets in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action.

The Golden Knights (7-18/4-9 NE-10) scored twice in the first on a two-run base hit by junior left fielder Nick Venier. Junior center fielder Derek Reed previously reached on an infield single and senior first baseman Zac Bellinger followed with a shot to left-center that put a pair of runners in scoring position for Venier who came through with two down.

Saint Rose subsequently put a runner in scoring position with less than two outs in both the third and fourth, and had runners on second and third in the fifth, but came up empty.

American International (10-19/7-8 NE-10) thus took advantage by scoring nine times in the fifth and three more times an inning later, before tacking on four more in the eighth.

Reed homered over the left field fence in the seventh and freshman right fielder Sean Maki belted one over the left field fence as well in the ninth to account for the other two Golden Knights runs.

Reed finished 4-for-4, Venier went 3-for-4 with a double, and Bellinger wound up 2-for-4 to extend his hit streak to 11 games. In the process, he raised his batting average to a team-high .371 (33-for-89), eighth best among the NE-10 leaders.

For the Yellow Jackets, graduate student center fielder Dave Clark finished 3-for-4 with a three-run homer in the sixth.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose is scheduled to play a three-game NE-10 Southwest Division Series at Southern Connecticut State this Friday and Saturday in New Haven. The Golden Knights then return home Sunday to host Dominican for a non-league date. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. American International has a three-game, home division series versus Adelphi on Saturday and Sunday.
