SAINT ROSE POUNDS OUT 22 HITS IN FINALE TO GAIN SPLIT WITH NEW HAVEN

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose pounded out 22 hits to gain a split against visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival New Haven this afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field. The Golden Knights (6-17/3-8 NE-10) took the final 19-4 after dropping the opener 8-2.

Freshman shortstop Bray Curreri belted a grand slam to highlight a nine run, Saint Rose seventh while junior center fielder Derek Reed went 5-for-6 with three RBI and a pair of doubles to spearhead the charge. On the mound, senior right-hander Ryan Harper allowed one earned run on four hits throughout 7.0 innings of work to go to 4-3 on the season.

Saint Rose batted around in both the fourth and seventh innings and pushed across five runs in the former after the Chargers had taken a 3-0 lead in the top half of the frame. Two-run doubles by Reed and junior catcher Patrick Griffin accounted for most of the damage.

The Golden Knights tacked on two more an inning later as senior right fielder Joseph Carcone belted an RBI base hit and then scored on a wild pitch.

New Haven got one back in the seventh when sophomore third baseman Jack Zagaja homered over the center field fence. Saint Rose promptly responded with its seventh inning outburst, before scoring three more times in the eighth. Zagaja wound up 2-for-4 for the Chargers.

In the opener, New Haven took a 2-1 lead in the second and then went up 4-2 in the sixth, before putting it out of reach with two runs in both the eighth and ninth.

Sophomore shortstop Tyler Ungerland went 3-for-4 with an RBI double and senior first baseman Zac Bellinger finished 2-for-4 for the Golden Knights. Meanwhile, sophomore left-hander Vincent Aprea gave up just one earned run on six hits in 7.0 innings of work to improve to 3-2 for the Chargers.

Looking ahead, the two teams will close out their weekend series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2:00 pm from Bob Bellizzi Field. Nine Saint Rose student-athletes will be honored in a brief pregame ceremony as part of Senior Day festivities.
