PACE DEFEATS SAINT ROSE IN NE-10 GAME; SQUEAKS PAST GOLDEN KNIGHTS IN NON-LEAGUE AFFAIR

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose suffered a pair of losses, 8-3 and 10-9, to visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University this afternoon at Bob Bellizzi Field. The second game was a seven-inning, non-league contest.

The Golden Knights (5-15/2-6 NE-10) made the latter interesting by rallying from a 10-5 deficit and putting the tying run in the scoring position in the last inning before the Setters (15-10/8-3 NE-10) were able to get the final out.

Junior left fielder Nick Venier tripled, senior first baseman Zac Bellinger stroked an RBI base hit, and freshman designated hitter Chris Introcaso belted a two-run double to the gap in left center to bring Saint Rose to within a run, before freshman shortstop Bray Curreri lined out to end the ballgame.

Venier finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, Bellinger wound up 3-for-4, and freshman center fielder Sean Maki went 2-for-3 as well. Curreri had a two-run double in the sixth.

Sophomore right fielder Cory Capaldi hit a grand slam over the left field fence in the fifth and smacked a two-run double an inning later to lead the Pace attack.

In the opener, Saint Rose jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third. However, the Setters tied it in the fifth, went up 4-3 in the sixth and then tacked on three more in the eighth and another in the ninth.

Venier had an RBI base hit, Bellinger pushed across the second run on a groundout, and Venier scored himself on a wild pitch to account for the three Golden Knights runs in the third.

Bellinger finished 2-for-4, while junior second baseman Andrew Coffey went 4-for-6 with a pair of runs and two RBI for Pace, which extended its win streak to seven games with today's two victories.

Looking ahead, both teams have conference divisional dates this Tuesday. The Golden Knights are scheduled to travel to Syracuse for a 3:00 pm meeting at Upstate Challenge rival Le Moyne, while the Setters have a 3:30 pm meeting at New Haven.
