GVSU, UMARY TOO MUCH FOR SAINT ROSE ON THURSDAY

CLERMONT, Fla. – A massive eight run first inning for the University of Mary proved to be too much for The College of Saint Rose softball team Thursday afternoon as the Golden Knights fell 11-2 (six innings) to the Marauders, and 6-1 to Grand Valley State earlier in the day at the NTC Spring Games and the National Training Center.

With the losses, Saint Rose fell to 4-5 on the season, while the Lakers improve to 11-1 and the Marauders moved to 6-9.

Freshman Nena Dudley kicked off scoring for UMary with a two RBI single to second base with runners on second and third. Dudley advanced to second on the throw to home as both runners scored on an error from catcher Zoe DuBois. Dudley was later driven in on a RBI single to right.

The Marauders continued hammering as they loaded up the bases, and nabbed another run on a walk, bringing up the top of the order with junior Alana Norman. She nabbed her second hit of the day with a two RBI single to left.

UMary laid down two more RBI singles throughout the inning to jump out to the 8-0 lead, capitalizing on seven hits and two errors.

The Golden Knights also got on the board in the first as junior Tina Karaqi stepped to the plate with the bases loaded. Karaqi popped up to third, but managed to collect the RBI as senior Marisa Bird reached home on a throwing error from third baseman Kristen Ormsby.

The Marauders collected another run in the fourth, and threatened the Golden Knights with the run rule, as sophomore Amber Gamboa notched a RBI single to center.

Saint Rose kept the game alive in the fifth with a double to left from Karaqi, sending sophomore Carly Wood home from third. UMary secured the win in the sixth as sophomore Taylor Mendez homered to left center, and Ormsby collected a RBI with a single to right center.

Junior Nicole Wickham (3-3) suffered the loss in the circle, giving up 15 hits and 11 runs, only three of them earned, and striking out three.

Junior Danielle Brusca registered a 2-for-4 effort from the plate, followed by Wood at 1-for-2.

Against the Lakers, Wood secured the only run of the game for Saint Rose as she struck her first home run of the season over the left field fence in the top of the first.

GVSU answered with three of their own runs in the second off its own homer, this time a three run shot to left center from junior Chelsea Horvath.

Freshman Teagan Shomin added another tally to the board for the Lakers with her own home run, this one to right center, giving GVSU a 4-1 lead.

In the sixth, the Lakers picked up a pair of insurance runs off two errors, a walk and a single to Brusca at short.

From the plate, six members of the Golden Knights squad nabbed one hit apiece, highlighted by Wood's homer.

Sophomore Renee Vaiano (1-2) threw a complete game, striking out two and giving up nine hits and six runs, only two of them earned.

Saint Rose wraps up its slate at the NTC Spring Games on Friday with a 9:00 am match up with Lock Haven and an 11:00 am contest against IUPUI.
