VAIANO COLLECTS FIRST WIN OF SEASON AT NTC SPRING GAMES

CLERMONT, Fla. – Freshman Taylor Solomon's two RBI single to center field kick started a four-run inning for The College of Saint Rose softball team in the fifth, allowing the Golden Knights to defeat Southern Wesleyan 9-3, followed by a 4-2 loss to Saginaw Valley State in the second and final game of the day Wednesday morning at the NTC Spring Games at the National Training Center.

Saint Rose moved to 4-3 overall on the season, while the Warriors fell to 7-6 and the Lady Cardinals improved to 8-4.

Prior to the fifth, SWU registered an early lead with a three-run performance in the first off a pair of hits, an error from Solomon at second and two passed balls.

Senior catcher Alexis Williams and junior short stop Danielle Brusca collected runs in the fourth off a pair of passed balls from the Warriors, bringing the Golden Knights within one.

SWU made a pitching change in the fifth and walked pinch hitter 3Rachel Waseleski#, loading up the bases for Brusca to enter and crack a two RBI single to right. The four runs throughout the inning gave Saint Rose a 6-3 advantage.

The Golden Knights added an insurance run in the sixth, and two more in the seventh off a RBI double from sophomore Carly Wood and a RBI single to third from junior Zoe DuBois .

Sophomore Renee Vaiano (1-1) collected her first win of the season as she struck out three and allowed six hits.

Against SVSU, the Lady Cardinals broke the scoring drought in the fifth, capitalizing on a throwing error and two RBI singles. They crossed the plate again in the sixth as junior Jessica Wood led off with a double to left field, and was driven in off a RBI single to second from senior Kari Knight.

Saint Rose picked up two runs in the bottom of the inning as senior Marisa Bird and Wood (Carly) occupied second and third, respectively, and DuBois stepped up to the plate. The Burnt Hills native rocked a hard hit to right center to collect a double and send both runners home. The Golden Knights put two more runners on in the inning, but could not score for the remainder of the game.

Junior Nicole Wickham (3-2) suffered the loss in the circle as she gave up eight hits and four runs, two of them earned.

DuBois led from the plate on the day with a 4-for-8 performance and three RBI, followed by Brusca and Solomon at 3-for-7 and two RBI apiece.

Saint Rose is set to face Grand Valley State and the University of Mary at 9:00 am and 11:00 am on Thursday.
