WEST HAVEN, Conn.–Senior guard Aquillan Hayes' half-court buzzer-beater sent Saturday afternoon's Northeast-10 Conference match-up into overtime, and allowed the University of New Haven to secure a 79-76 victory over The College of Saint Rose at Charger Gymnasium.
Hayes registered 29 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double to lead UNH (19-3 overall, 13-3 NE-10) to its 19th win of the season. Saint Rose fell to 10-12, 6-10 with the loss.
A scrappy first half that showed both teams shooting less than 34.0 percent from the floor, gave the Chargers a 27-24 lead at the break. Saint Rose opened up the second stanza on a 9-0 run, and gave up a single 3-pointer before dishing out another large spurt, this time with a 10-2 advantage.
The Golden Knights moved out to a 12-point lead with 11:05 remaining, and stayed up by double digits for more than three minutes. The Chargers fed off 14 points from Hayes through the final eight minutes, including her half-court toss at the horn, to force the game into extra time.
UNH kept its momentum going in overtime with a 7-0 run, holding the Golden Knights from scoring until the 48 second mark. Junior guard Taylor Nazon sank two free throws to bring Saint Rose within six with 37 seconds remaining, followed by a layup from senior guard Jamie Hutcheson and a 3-pointer from Gabie Polce. The Chargers snuck in three solid free throws within that span for a 75-72 lead.
Saint Rose sent both Hayes and senior forward Rykema Stone to the line twice more for four points, and mustered the same count out of Hutcheson, to come within three once again with just nine seconds left. The Golden Knights trekked down the court and handed the ball off to Polce from beyond the arc, but her efforts came up just short.
Polce paced Saint Rose with 21 points, followed by Hutcheson with 20. Junior forward Sarah Illingworth and Hutcheson nabbed 10 boards apiece to lead on the glass. Hutcheson dished out four assists, while Polce and Nazon registered three each.
The Golden Knights return to the Capital Region on Wednesday to host Pace at 5:30 pm for Athletic Appreciation Night, followed by the final home game of the regular season on Saturday against Le Moyne in an Upstate Challenge match. Game time is slated for 1:30 pm, with the program getting started a few minutes early to honor the five seniors for their dedication to the program. Fans are encouraged to wear black during the contest with the Dolphins to support Saint Rose in a Black Out.Â
