ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose jumped out to an early lead and held off a late surge to upend
Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division leader American International 68-54 during
Stomp Out Hunger Night at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium this evening. The Golden Knights outrebounded the Yellow Jackets by a 46-35 margin that yielded a 19-3 differential in second-chance points.
Â
Freshman guard
Jamaal Greenwood and junior guard
Chris Dorgler led the way for the Golden Knights (6-16/4-11 NE-10). Greenwood went 4-for-7 from the arc on the way to a season-high 23 points while Dorgler recorded his third career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. He also handed out six assists.
Â
Saint Rose came out firing as Dorgler knocked down three trifectas throughout the opening five minutes to put Saint Rose up by nine, 11-2. Five minutes after that, Greenwood hit a 3-pointer himself and freshman forward
Julian Lipinski drained a pair from the line that afforded the Golden Knights their largest advantage of the evening, 24-6.
Â
American International (15-5/10-4 NE-10) managed to get back to within 10, 32-22, with 24 seconds left until intermission, but freshman center
Sam Eckstrom went 1-for-2 from the stripe and Greenwood banked home a 35-foot trey at the buzzer that put Saint Rose up 36-22 at the break.
Â
The Golden Knights then built their advantage back to 17 on three occasions in the opening 13 minutes of the second half, before freshman forward
Jack Jones canned a 3-pointer to again make it an 18 point, 60-42, contest with 7:46 showing on the clock.
Â
American International countered by using some full court pressure that manufactured a 12-3 jaunt and cut its deficit to nine, 63-54, with 2:36 to go. Senior guard Al-Shabazz Jabateh finished off a feed from senior forward Marcus Porter to cap the spurt.
Â
However, Saint Rose subsequently went 5-for-6 from the line and the Yellow Jackets misfired on their final seven shots to allow the Golden Knights to secure the victory.
Â
Lipinski also wound up with a double-double via 10 points and 11 boards, all from the defensive glass, and Jones added 10 points and six rebounds to help the Golden Knights cause. Senior guard Bobby Harris tossed in 19 points to pace American International.
Â
Looking ahead, both teams have conference dates on tap for Saturday. Saint Rose will travel to New Haven for a 1:30 pm game while the Yellow Jackets will host Pace University at 3:30 pm in Springfield.
