ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose had its most prolific offensive output of the season, but Merrimack was in rarified air as the Warriors outsprinted the Golden Knights 104-97 in tonight's
Northeast-10 Conference encounter at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. Merrimack (8-6/3-6 NE-10) was thus able to run its win streak to five games.
Â
The Golden Knights (5-12/3-7 NE-10) put five players in double-figures scoring and shot a blistering a 56.5 percent from the floor, including 50.0 percent (16-for-32) from the arc. However, the Warriors proved up to the task on both fronts. They canned 62.1 percent (36-for-58) of their shots from the field and buried 56.0 percent (14-for-25) of their long range attempts.
Â
Freshman forward
Jalaun Taylor went 10-for-14 from the floor and knocked down 6-of-7 from 3-point range to lead Saint Rose with a season-best 27 points. Junior guard
Chris Dorgler finished with 21 points and freshman guard
Jamaal Greenwood wound up with season-highs of 16 points and six assists. Furthermore, junior guard
Max Weaver and freshman center
Sam Eckstrom scored 10 points each.
Â
The Golden Knights trailed by 19, 74-55, with 13:55 to go after Merrimack opened the second half with a 21-13 spurt that increased its 11 point, 53-42, halftime advantage.
Â
Regardless, Saint Rose refused to go way and made it interesting down the stretch. Eckstrom finished inside to make it a single digit affair, 86-78, with 6:41 to go and then hit a pair from the line to make it a four point ballgame, 86-82, two minutes later.
Â
However, Merrimack rattled off 11 unanswered points to put itself in the catbird seat behind a 15 point, 97-82, cushion with just less than three minutes left.
Â
Junior guard Gelvis Solano scored 25 of his career-high 44 points in the first stanza to lead the Merrimack barrage. Fellow junior guard Troy Hammel finished with 23 while junior forward James Kennedy and junior guard JT Strickland had 17 and 11 respectively.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are off until next Wednesday, January 21, when they travel to Colchester, VT to take on Saint Michael's. Tip-off for the NE-10 doubleheader nightcap is set for 7:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Warriors are back home this Saturday, January 17, to host Le Moyne at 3:00 pm in North Andover, MA.
