SAINT ROSE HOLDS OFF FRANKLIN PIERCE

ALBANY-Sophomore forward Staci Barrett hit a 15 foot jumper with five seconds left and The College of Saint Rose held off a late Franklin Pierce fury to upend the Ravens 58-56 in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium this afternoon.

The Golden Knights (6-8/3-6 NE-10) tied their season low with only 11 turnovers and outscored the Ravens (8-4/6-3 NE-10) 34-18 in the paint to chalk up their third win in the last four games.

Senior guard Jamie Hutcheson recorded her third double-double of the year to lead the Saint Rose offense. Hutcheson tied her career-high with 19 points and hauled in 10 rebounds to go along with three assists and a pair of steals. Also, senior center Mariah Lesure and Barrett tossed in 12 points each.

For Franklin Pierce, junior forward Kara Charette scored 26 points and junior guard Dyamond Gardner added eight points and six boards.

The Golden Knights opened the second stanza with a 12-2 spurt that increased a 29-23 halftime lead to a 16 point, 41-25, advantage with 14:32 remaining. Franklin Pierce answered with a 17-4 jaunt that made it a one possession game, 45-42, with 8:31 left. Saint Rose then countered with a 9-2 run to boost its advantage back to double digits, 54-44, with 4:30 to go. Lesure went 1-for-2 from the line to ignite it and Hutcheson converted a layup to cap it and seemingly put the Golden Knights back in the driver's seat.

However, the Ravens responded with one more charge. Junior guard Natalie Bastian knocked down a trey to initialize a 12-2 charge that afforded the contest its sixth deadlock, 56-56, with 34 seconds remaining. The Ravens had a chance to take the lead for the first time since the midway point of the opening period, but Bastian missed the second of two free throws to set the stage for Barrett.

Franklin Pierce subsequently had one last chance out of a timeout, but Charette's 10 foot jumper rolled out at the buzzer.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are back home Tuesday to host NE-10 rival Merrimack at 5:30 pm. The game may be seen live on www.gogoldenknights.tv. Meanwhile, the Ravens are off until next Saturday, January 17 when they will host New Haven at 1:30 pm.
