Box Score
ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose rebounded from a nine point second half deficit to get to within one, but New Haven held on to upend the Golden Knights 72-62 in
Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Chargers (15-7/10-6 NE-10) outscored the Golden Knights 17-4 from the foul line to chalk up their third win in the last four contests during the annual PinkZone game.
Junior guard
Jamie Hutcheson recorded her third "double-double" of the year to pace Saint Rose (9-13/4-12 NE-10). Hutcheson filled the box score behind season-highs of 17 points and five steals, to go along with 10 rebounds and six assists. Freshman forward
Staci Barrett added 12 points while junior guard
Gabie Polce and senior guard
Desiree Simmons tossed in eight apiece.
Saint Rose found itself down seven, 53-46, midway through the second stanza after New Haven graduate forward Ayana Duncanson knocked down a jumper.
The Golden Knights hung tough though and manufactured a 12-6 spurt that made it a one point, 59-58, affair with 2:47 showing on the clock. Barrett drained a jumper in the paint and finished a Hutcheson steal to ignite the run, and then Hutcheson buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cap it.
It was still a one point ballgame just a bit more than a minute later when Polce converted a pair of free throws. However, junior guard Aquillin Hayes hit a jumper at the other end to push the Chargers advantage back to three. New Haven then went 9-for-10 from the free throw line and held the Golden Knights to just one field goal from that point forward to seal the victory.
Hayes led four Chargers in twin-figures with a "double-double" of her own. Hayes tossed in 14 of her 25 points in the second half and hauled in 13 rebounds. Junior forward Bria Moore and junior guard Elizabeth Cruso scored 12 points apiece, while senior guard Audrey Cunningham added 10 in only 11 minutes off the bench.
As part of today's PinkZone festivities, all of the gate receipts were donated towards the fight against cancer.
Up next, the Golden Knights are back on the road Wednesday with a 5:30 pm date at Pace University in Pleasantville. Meanwhile, the Chargers head to Syracuse Tuesday to take on Le Moyne at 5:00 pm.
