PHILADELPHIA USES SECOND HALF SURGE TO UPEND GOLDEN KNIGHTS

PHILADELPHIA-Host Philadelphia University used a 17-3 run in the opening two minutes of the second half to put itself in control of an eventual 73-62 victory against The College of Saint Rose during the first day of action at the East Region Classic this afternoon.

The Rams (6-4) outscored the Golden Knights 18-6 from the foul line and had each of their only five participating players in double-figures scoring.

Junior guard Max Weaver recorded his second double-double within the past three games to lead Saint Rose (5-6). Weaver finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three assists, while fellow junior guard Chris Dorgler contributed 11 points and six assists. Furthermore, freshman guard Jalaun Taylor added nine points, seven rebounds and three helpers.

For Philadelphia University, junior forward Derek Johnson went 5-for-9 from the arc on the way to a game-high 19 points. Junior guard Andre Gibbs tossed in 17, while junior forward Peter Alexis finished with 14 points and 12 boards as the Rams ran their win streak to three games.

Philadelphia University closed the first half with a 12-5 run that transformed a five point, 23-18, lead in to a 12 point, 35-23, cushion at the break. Johnson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to lead the Rams charge.

The Golden Knights then opened the second half with five unanswered points as freshman forward Anthony Russell drained a 3-pointer from the left corner and fellow freshman forward Jack Jones finished a fast break with a dunk. However, the Rams scored 17 of the game's ensuing 20 points to put themselves in control.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose will conclude its stay at the East Region Classic tomorrow with a 1:00 pm game versus Holy Family. Meanwhile, Philadelphia University will take on Assumption at 3:00 pm.
