SAINT ROSE HOLDS OFF BLOOMFIELD

ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose held off a second half surge to upend visiting Bloomfield 76-73 in the second and final day of action of the Northeast-10 Challenge this afternoon. The tournament, presented by Hilton Garden Inn-Albany Medical Center, featured a four-game sweep of the two NE-10 schools against their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rivals as Le Moyne upended Wilmington 81-53 earlier today.

Freshman forward Jack Jones led the Golden Knights (2-0) with 18 points while fellow freshman forward Jalaun Taylor and junior guard Max Weaver tossed in 16 and 15 respectively.

Junior guard Chris Dorgler and freshman center Sam Eckstrom also had great efforts for the Golden Knights, who were outscored 24-12 from the charity stripe. Dorgler tied his career-high with six assists to go along with seven points, five rebounds and three assists; while Eckstrom finished with seven points and 13 rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.

Meanwhile, junior forward Claude Blue tossed in 20 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor to lead four double-digit scorers for the Bears (0-2). Junior guard Clarence White and senior guard Marvin Williams scored 17 and 16 respectively. Senior guard Matt Hall added a dozen.

The Golden Knights went into the locker room up 46-34 at intermission and boosted that margin to 16, 66-50, midway through the second half. However, the Bears rattled off 14 unanswered points to get to within a bucket, 66-64, with 6:17 to go.

It was a two point ballgame on four ensuing occasions, including 74-72, with 51 seconds remaining when a Saint Rose turnover afforded Bloomfield a chance to tie the game for the first time since the five minute mark of the first half. However, Blue went 1-for-2 from the foul line with three seconds left and thus the Bears were forced to foul. Jones then drained a pair of free throws out of a timeout to seal the victory.

Up next, Saint Rose will play its Northeast-10 Conference opener this Wednesday, November 19, at Pace University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
