PHILADELPHIA – After entering halftime in a complete tie, The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team burst out of the break with a 13-point spurt that resulted in a 60-57 win over Chestnut Hill in the Philadelphia University Tournament Friday evening at the Gallagher Center.
Sophomore forward
Staci Barrett led the Golden Knights (1-0) with 15 points, followed by senior guard
Gabie Polce with 14. Barrett also racked up 11 boards for her first double-double of the season. Senior guard
Jamie Hutcheson just missed out on her own double-double as she posted a career-high 15 boards and nine points.
Tied at 30-30 coming out of the halftime break, Saint Rose laid down an impressive 13-0 run through the first six minutes of the second half, putting the Griffins (0-1) at a 43-30 deficit. Both teams battled, struggling to put anything together, until the 14:48 mark when Chestnut Hill picked up five points off three free throws and a layup.
The Griffins continued to push, and came within two after a pair of good attempts from the line from senior guard Olivia Gorczynski. The Golden Knights followed with three perfect free throws of their own with less than 15 seconds remaining to secure the win.
Early in the game, Saint Rose found itself in a 10-4 hole. Hutcheson's lone 3-pointer on the night brought the Golden Knights within three of Chestnut Hill, and Saint Rose only gained momentum from there. The Golden Knights chipped away at the board, and made the game even at the 13-13 mark, followed by an 8-0 run late in the half to take a 28-24 lead, but it would not be enough to hold the Griffins from tying the game just before the halftime buzzer.
Tournament play continues on Saturday as Saint Rose meets with the host Rams at 3:00 pm. The Golden Knights remain on the road next week as they open the Northeast-10 Conference season at Pace on Wednesday, and head to Upstate Challenge foe Le Moyne on Saturday. Saint Rose makes its home debut in Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium on Tuesday, November 25 against Adelphi. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm.
