GOLDEN KNIGHTS HOST PENMEN FOR WELCOME BACK STUDENTS DAY

Sophomore forward Sarah Illingworth and the Golden Knights host Southern New Hampshire at 1:30 pm today for Welcome Back Students Day and Sports Bingo.

The Plot: The College of Saint Rose and Southern New Hampshire University both looks to snap skids during Northeast-10 Conference play this afternoon.

Welcome Back Students Day: Today is "Welcome Back Students Day" along with Sports Bingo presented by Paesan's Pizza and Restaurant. The first 200 students in attendance for the league doubleheader receive a free slice of pizza. Attendees also have the opportunity to play sports bingo throughout today's game.

Last Time Out: Host Merrimack went 16-for-18 from the foul line throughout the final 6:28 to upend Saint Rose 62-57 in a NE-10 encounter Tuesday evening. The Warriors bounced back from a 12-point deficit behind a 19-7 run during the middle stages of the second half and then made the most of their opportunities from the stripe to chalk up their fifth win in the last six games. Junior center Jess DeNicola went 8-for-11 from the floor and scored 15 of her 19 points in the second half despite picking up her fourth foul with 8:00 to go. Junior guards Jamie Hutcheson and Gabie Polce scored nine points apiece. Furthermore, senior guard Brittany O'Shea handed out a career-high 10 assists and added six points. Sophomore forward Sarah Illingworth hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds, all from the defensive glass.

Last Meeting (1/16/13): Host Southern New Hampshire scored seven unanswered points during the final minute of the first half and then built a double-digit advantage throughout the majority of the second period en route to a 60-39 NE-10 victory against Saint Rose. Senior guard Desiree Simmons was the lone Saint Rose player in double-figures scoring. She finished with 10 points throughout 21 minutes of reserve duty. Jessica Walton and sophomore guard Nicole Bini added six points apiece. Junior guard Lorreta Rocha scored 11 of her team-high 13 points in the second half to lead the Penmen. Meanwhile, Deb LaValley went 4-for-5 from the floor on the way to 11 points throughout 17 minutes off the bench.

Scouting Saint Rose (8-8/3-7 NE-10): The Golden Knights are 0-4 since the New Year. DeNicola is averaging 13.5 points per-game in the last four contests while shooting 52.2 percent (23-for-44) from the field. Additonally, O'Shea has passed out at least three assists in the last seven games. Saint Rose is first in the league with 15.9 free throws made and 25.4 attempted. Futhermore, the Golden Knights are 5-0 when holding opponents to less than 60 points.

Scouting Southern New Hampshire (5-10/3-7 NE-10): The Penmen have dropped eight straight games after starting the season 5-2. However, Southern New Hampshire ranks first in the NE-10 with 4.6 blocks per-game and is holding opponents to a 27.9, 3-point field goal percentage, third best in the conference. Furthermore, sophomore forward Bianca Langford is fourth in the league with 1.2 blocks per-game. Junior guard Brooke Springfield is averaging 35.5 minutes per-game.

Up Next:  Both teams return to conference action this Wednesday, January 22. The Golden Knights will host Saint Michael's for Student-Athlete Academic Appreciation Night presented by Hugh Johnson Advisors. Meanwhile, the Penmen have a 5:30 pm date at Adelphi on Long Island.
