ALBANY-Le Moyne shot 57.7 percent (15-for-26) from the floor throughout the second period to break open a two point game at halftime and thus upend The College of Saint Rose 83-71 in a
Northeast-10 Conference encounter this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. In the process, the Dolphins (4-1/1-1 NE-10) gained one-half point in the year-long
Upstate Challenge rivalry series between the two schools.
Senior guard
Desiree Simmons recorded a "double-double" to lead the Golden Knights (3-3/1-2 NE-10). Simmons finished with a career-high 26 points along with 11 rebounds, while junior center
Mariah Lesure had 23 points, nine boards, three assists and a like number of steals. Also, sophomore forward #Sarah Illingworth tossed in nine points and hauled in 16 rebounds, nine from the offensive glass, while junior guard
Gabie Polce added 10 points.
After going into the locker room with a 36-34 advantage at the break, Le Moyne used an 11-4 spurt at the 13:42 mark of the second half to transform a still two point, 53-51, advantage into a nine point, 64-55, cushion with 9:49 remaining when junior forward Bath-Sheba McMahon converted a three-point play. Three minutes later, the Dolphins used an 11-3 jaunt to put themselves in control with a 16 point, 75-59, margin when junior forward Emily Greer canned her only 3-ponter of the afternoon.
Saint Rose was unable to cut its deficit to less than double-digits the rest of the way.
Senior guard Kayla Stroman went 5-for-7 from the arc on the way to 26 points to lead four Dolphins in double-figures. Junior guard Alex Marple finished with 22 points and six assists while sophomore forward Maggie Brown and Greer wound up with 10 each.
This afternoon's game was dedicated to
Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless, an organization in downtown Albany that provides a series of programs and services to address the needs of the homeless and low-income community.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose plays at Adelphi Tuesday evening for a 5:30 pm league game in Garden City, NY. Meanwhile, Le Moyne returns to the court next Sunday when the Dolphins travel to Lincoln University to face the Lions at 4:00 pm.
