ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose outscored Southern Connecticut State 73-42 throughout the final 29 minutes en route to an 81-62 Northeast-10 Conference victory this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (4-7/1-6 NE-10) shot 55.6 percent (15-for-27) from the floor in the second half and held the Owls (4-6/1-6 NE-10) to a mere 25.0 percent (8-for-32) shooting during that span.

Senior forward Jessica Walton led five players in double-figures scoring with 18 points and eight rebounds while senior forward Maria Sanchez Gonzalez registered a “double-double” behind 12 points and 10 boards in only 25 minutes off the bench.

Also, freshman guard Nicole Bini tossed in 13 behind 3-for-4 shooting from the arc, while sophomore guard Gabie Polce and freshman guard Tyler Hansen wound up with 12 and 10 respectively.

Meanwhile, freshman forward Jackie Bethea and sophomore guard Mariah Hankton scored 15 and 14 respectively for Southern Connecticut State.

The Golden Knights closed out the first half by scoring 21 of the final 31 points to erase a 12 point, 20-8, deficit and walk in the locker room down just a point, 30-29, at intermission.

They then picked up right where they left off with a 13-0 run in the early going of the second stanza that transformed a 32-29 deficit into a 42-32 advantage with 15:38 to go after Bini drained a 3-pointer. The Owls scored four straight to get back to within six, but Polce subsequently finished inside to push the margin back to 10, 50-40, with 12:00 remaining.

A free throw by freshman forward Kelsey Glanzman, a Walton jumper, and a Bini layup then made it a 15 point, 55:40, affair with10:43 left and the Golden Knights never looked back.

Prior to the game, longtime Saint Rose fan and supporter Jackie Birk was honored during a brief ceremony. Birk has helped direct the HEOP/ACCESS programs throughout the past 21 years and has been a fixture at Golden Knights athletics events.

Looking ahead, both teams have 5:30 pm conference dates on tap for Wednesday. The Golden Knights will host Saint Anselm in a game that will be streamed live on www.gogoldenknights.tv. Meanwhile, the Owls will entertain Franklin Pierce in New Haven.
