GOLDEN KNIGHTS DROP SOGGY DOUBLEHEADER TO RIVERHAWKS

Junior Rachel Reed had three hits and drove in a pair of runs in the doubleheader on Sunday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ALBANY, NY – The College of Saint Rose softball team played through the raindrops at Cathy Cummings Haker Field on Sunday afternoon. Saint Rose saw a comeback fall just short in game one before dropping a slugfest in game two as the Golden Knights dropped a pair to Northeast-10 Conference foe UMass-Lowell. Saint Rose lost the first game 6-4 before falling in the nightcap 11-7.

The RiverHawks got the early jump in game one with a four-run first inning, keyed by a throwing error that extended the inning and a subsequent two-run single by sophomore Ali Ferraro to grab UMass-Lowell the early lead.

Saint Rose got on the board in the fourth inning. Reigning NE-10 Player of the Week, sophomore Olivia Reeves, singled to lead off the frame. Senior Kayla Kuilema sacrificed Reeves to second. Two batters later, junior Rachel Reed delivered her second hit of the game, this time a sharp single to left to score Reeves and cut the UMass-Lowell lead to 4-1.

The Golden Knight cut into the lead further in the fifth as with one out, senior Lindsay David singled. Sophomore Amber Loussedes sacrificed David to second. On the play, the RiverHawks third baseman threw the ball wide of first base, allowing Loussedes to reach and moving David to third. On the first pitch to freshman Kari Bird, Loussedes stole second. On the throw to second to try to get the runner, David was able to come in to score, slicing the UMass-Lowell lead to 4-2.

UMass-Lowell would get a pair of runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single by freshman Ariana Darcy to push the lead back to four. Saint Rose kept battling, scoring a run in the bottom of the frame on a David single to slice the advantage to 6-3. Loussedes followed with a single to load the bases for the Golden Knights, but RiverHawks pitcher, freshman Courtney Lafranchi was able to retire the final batter of the inning and end the threat.

Saint Rose wasn't done yet as Reeves doubled to lead off the seventh. Following a strikeout and a groundout, Reeves stood on third. Reed came up and laced a single to center to score Reeves to make it a two-run game. That was as close as the Golden Knight would get as senior Elyssa Boris came on for the RiverHawks to shut the door.

The win in game one went to Lafranchi with Boris earning her second save. Freshman Lauren Sputo fell to 3-9 with the loss for Saint Rose.

Game two turned out to be a slugfest. After the RiverHawks got on the board with a pair of first inning runs, Saint Rose stormed back with a six-spot in the bottom of the frame. Loussedes led off with a single followed by walks to Bird and Reeves, a groundout by senior Jessica Butterbrodt scored Loussedes to make it a 2-1 game.

With two outs and a runner on third, the Golden Knights kept the rally going as Reed walked. David followed with a ringing double off the leftfield wall, scoring both Bird and Reed to make it 3-2 Saint Rose. Kuilema stepped in and roped a single to left to score David. The inning was capped when freshman Alexis Williams clubbed her third homer of the season, a towering blast to right-center, to make it 6-2 Golden Knights.

Unfortunately for Saint Rose, the lead would not last as UMass-Lowell scored a run in the second and then with the help of two errors, two hit by pitch and three walks, the RiverHawks plated five runs in the fourth to take an 8-6 lead.

The Golden Knights got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning as with two outs, Butterbrodt drove home junior Steph Luce to cut the lead to 8-7.

A win was not in the cards, however, a UMass-Lowell scored a pair of runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to create the final margin.

The game two win went to Lafranchi (8-4) who pitched four innings in relief. Senior Sarah Arbogast took the loss for Saint Rose.

Both clubs are idle until Tuesday afternoon when they resume their league schedules. Saint Rose plays host against New Haven. The games will be broadcast on gogoldenknights.tv. UMass-Lowell is on the road, travelling to Saint Michael's. Both contests will start at 3:00 pm
