HOT SHOOTING ASSUMPTION HOLDS OFF GOLDEN KNIGHTS

ALBANY – Assumption shot a sizzling 52.0 percent (26-or-50) from the floor to upend The College of Saint Rose 71-63 in Northeast-10 Conference action tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. Saint Rose was pretty good itself with a 48.9 (22-for45) field goal percentage, but was hurt by 27 turnovers that yielded a like number of points at the other end.

Freshman guard Nicole Bini led the Golden Knights (2-5/0-5 NE-10) by finishing in double-figures for the sixth time with a game-high 19 points. Sophomore guard Gabie Polce went 7-for-7 from the floor on the way to 16 points while junior guard Brittany O'Shea and senior forward Jessica Walton wound up with seven each.

As for the Greyhounds (7-1/5-1 NE-10) who are receiving votes in the latest WBCA/USA Today National Poll, senior guard Gabrielle Gibson scored 18 points in 25 minutes off the bench to lead four double-digit scorers. Senior forward Sabrina Siciliano and senior guard Katy Howard finished with 13 and 12 points respectively, while junior guard Shannon Ray tossed in 11 throughout 28 minutes of reserve duty.

It was pretty much a one possession ballgame throughout most of the first half although Assumption scored the final four points take a 35-31 lead at the break.

The second stanza was defined by several runs. The Greyhounds opened the period with a 10-2 spurt that afforded them their largest lead of the evening, 45-33, with 14:44 remaining. The Golden Knights raced right back though with a 10-1 jaunt of their own that cut their deficit to a hoop, 46-44, with 11:37 to go.

Assumption eventually pushed its advantage back to eight, 58-50, after junior guard Tafanie Roye finished off a fast break with 6:37 left.

The Golden Knights had one more surge left in them though as Bini knocked down one of her four 3-pointers to make it a four point, 60-56, ballgame with 4:18 showing on the clock. However, the Greyhounds responded with six unanswered points that put them in control, 66-56, in the final minute.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are back on the road Saturday with a 1:30 pm conference date at American International in Springfield, MA. Meanwhile, Assumption is off until Monday, December 17 when the Greyhounds host league rival Le Moyne at 5:30 pm.
