Box Score

FLUSHING, NY – Junior guard Brittany O'Shea put in a lay-up with just 14 seconds remaining to give The College of Saint Rose a season-opening 53-51 win against Post University during the Queens College Tip-Off Tournament.

Sophomore guard Gabie Polce led all Saint Rose (1-0) scorers behind 11 points while also passing out three assists and taking two steals.  Freshman guard Nicole Bini knocked three shots from beyond the arc for 10 points in her collegiate debut.  Senior forward Jessica Walton also notched 10 points to go with seven rebounds while fellow senior forward Maria Sanchez Gonzalez pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Aubrey Latham scored a game-high 21 points for the Eagles (0-1) on 8-of-13 shooting from the field.  Latham also led the team with five boards.  Junior guard Fernanda Mansilla dished out five assists to guide the offense for Post.

Latham cut the Saint Rose lead at the end of the first half to one point going into the locker room with 42 seconds left, making the score 31-30 at the break.  The Golden Knights had a lead as large as four points throughout the first 20 minutes, compared to the Eagles controlling a lead up to five points.  Saint Rose benefitted from an 18-10 advantage in points in the paint, as Walton scored eight points.  Latham poured in 11 points to have the high point total at the half.

Each teams' shooting percentage dipped in the second half, as the defense from both squads held its opponent to under 30 percent shooting.  However, Polce knocked down a three to give Saint Rose its largest lead of the contest at six points with just seven minutes expired.

Post took a lead of two points with 4:42 remaining in regulation, the start of no team being able to score until 59 seconds remaining when Polce connected on two free throws after being fouled.  Polce opportunity was created by a Bini steal just two seconds before.

The Golden Knights defense again helped up as the team forced a missed three-pointer that landed to O'Shea for the defensive rebound at 29 seconds left.  Just 15 seconds later, O'Shea put in the go-ahead lay-up that proved to be the final basket of the game.  The Eagles managed to get off two more shots, however, neither was able to fall to force overtime.

After a thrilling contest, both teams return to action tomorrow to continue the tip-off tournament.  The Golden Knights are first, playing Concordia at 1:00 pm.  Post then follows at 3:00 pm to take on the host Knights of Queens.
