ALBANY – New Haven used a 17-5 run down the stretch en route to a 73-63 victory against The College of Saint Rose in what marked the 2012-13
Northeast-10 Conference opener for both squads tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Chargers (2-1/1-0 NE-10) also helped themselves by outscoring the Golden Knights 19-8 from the foul line, including 13-2 in the second half.
Freshman guard
Nicole Bini was in double-figures for the third straight time to start her collegiate career with a team-high 23 points for the Golden Knights (2-1/0-1 NE-10). Senior forward
Maria Sanchez Gonzalez finished with 10 points, on 5-for-5 shooting from the floor, and pulled down five rebounds in just 19 minutes due to foul trouble.
Freshman guard Briana Bradford and sophomore center Ashley LeBlanc tossed in 14 points each to lead four Chargers in twin-figures. LeBlanc also hauled in eight rebounds. Senior guard Nikita Reddy and sophomore forward Bria Moore added 14 and 10 points respectively.
Saint Rose owned a one point, 54-53; lead with 5:38 to play after Sanchez Gonzalez knocked down a jumper. However, LeBlanc finished in the paint at the other end to spark the final run and the Chargers never trailed again. Saint Rose got it to within three, 63-60, after sophomore guard
Gabie Polce drained a 3-pointer with 1:47 to go, but New Haven scored eight unanswered points to secure the win.
Up next, the Golden Knights head to Syracuse on Tuesday, November 20 to take on conference rival Le Moyne in the latest edition of the year-long
Upstate Challenge between the two schools. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Chargers return home this Sunday, November 18 for a 2:00 pm non-league date versus Dowling.
