ALBANY - The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball team returns to action tonight. The Golden Knights (1-2) are set to welcome Dominican College (2-1) to Nolan Gymnasium for a 7:00 pm non-conference match. It also marks the 2011 home-opener for Saint Rose. The Golden Knights are coming off of a 3-0 win versus University of the Sciences on Saturday, while the Chargers opened their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference slate with a 3-0 victory at Felician College last night.
LAST MEETING (September 10, 2010)
Saint Rose grabbed a 1-0 lead via a 25-23 first set victory, but Dominican College roared back to take the next three sets 25-21, 26-24 and 25-22 en route to a 3-1 triumph over the Golden Knights last September 10 at the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Challenge that was hosted by American International College. Kelly Ryan and sophomore outside hitter
Christina Strezenec played major roles for Saint Rose. Ryan finished with 14 kills and nine blocks, while Strezenec came up with 31 digs. Additionally, senior middle hitter
Chelsea Tyler registered nine kills and four blocks and senior setter
Theresa Staulo handed out 35 assists.
SCOUTING SAINT ROSE (1-2)
The Golden Knights picked up their first win of the 2011 campaign by sweeping University of the Sciences in Philadelphia 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon to wrap up their stay at the Kutztown Classic. A pair of freshmen setters in
Ariana Wilson and
Tori Daniels ran the offense to the tune of 17 and 15 assists respectively. Also, freshman defensive specialist
Katy Daniels led the Golden Knights with 15 digs and three aces.
Junior right side hitter
Kaitlyn Jasnica capped off an efficient afternoon by hitting .450. Jasnica wound up with nine kills on 20 swings without an error.
Senior outside hitter
Aubrey Bobo paces Saint Rose with 32 kills (2.91 k/s) and ranks second on the squad with 27 digs (2.45 d/s) at this juncture. Wilson and Daniels have combined to handle the setting duties thus far. Wilson has 65 assists, while Tori Daniels has handed out 41.
SCOUTING DOMINICAN (2-1)
The Chargers have won two in a row after dropping their 2011 season-opener at Southern Connecticut State last Saturday. Dominican upended host Felician College last night 25-17, 25-9 and 25-15 in a CACC match. Junior outside hitters Courtney Heard and Michelle Fiorvanti led the way with 15 and 11 kills respectively.
The Chargers, who also hit a season-high .384, were picked to finish second in the North Division of the CACC preseason poll.
UP NEXT
Saint Rose has a minor break in the schedule after playing four matches in six days. The Golden Knights will have the weekend off before welcoming Post University to Nolan Gymnasium at 7:00 pm Tuesday. Dominican is set to appear in the Yellow Jacket Invitational this weekend. The Chargers take on host American International at 4:00 pm Friday before meeting St. Mary's University (TX) at 8:00 pm.
