Box Score ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team was forced to play a man-down for nearly 40-minutes and the Golden Knights could not find the equalizer as visiting Nyack College walked away with a 1-0 victory in the opening round of the Saint Rose Soccer Kick-Off Classic at Sullivan Field. The Warriors produced the game's lone strike off of a restart in the 51st minute.
Junior midfielder Marco Likos drove the game-winner into the upper left corner of the net from 25-yards out on a free kick. Nyack (1-0-0) got itself into scoring position when sophomore midfielder Arturo Garcia was tripped just outside the penalty area.
The best opportunity for the Golden Knights came with less than two minutes to play. Junior forward
Giancarlo Montenegro collected a ball in space on the left channel and fired a shot that hit the left post. The rebound was cleared away from danger to keep Saint Rose off the board.
Both keepers controlled the box throughout. Senior
Patrik Ohlsson wound up with six saves for the Golden Knights (0-1-0), while senior Adrian Ibanez stopped four shots for the Warriors.
In tonight's second game, Saint Michael's College and Mercy College played to a 0-0 double-overtime draw. The Purple Knights (0-0-1) held a slim 13-11 edge in shots, while the Mavericks (0-0-1) had a 9-5 margin in corners. Junior keeper Logan Kingman finished with six saves for Saint Michael's and junior keeper Nick Papas had six of his own for Mercy.
All four squads return to action tomorrow when the tournament resumes. Nyack will take on Saint Michael's at 1:00 pm, while the host Golden Knights entertain Mercy at 4:00 pm.
