NEW HAVEN – The College of Saint rallied from a 2-0 deficit by taking the final three sets by a total of 18 points en route to a 3-2 victory at Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State this afternoon. The match marked the 2011 league opener for both squads.
The Golden Knights (5-2/1-0 NE-10) hit a collective .342 behind 32 kills against just seven attack errors throughout 73 swings during the final three sets to secure the victory.
Senior outside hitter
Sarah Kahrs finished with a match-high 16 kills to go along with 10 digs, while fellow senior outside hitter
Aubrey Bobo registered 12 kills to lead the Saint Rose attack. Additionally, freshman setters
Ariana Wilson and
Tori Daniels ran the offense to the tune of 22 and 18 assists respectively, while freshman defensive specialist
Katy Daniels led five Saint Rose players in double-figure digs with 23.
Sophomore outside hitter Lauren McVey wound up with 12 kills and 18 digs, and senior outside hitter Megan Lyons recorded eight kills, six aces, 10 digs and a pair of blocks to pace the Owls (5-3/0-1 NE-10).
Junior right side hitter
Kaitlyn Jasnica came up with a kill to close out the third set and swing the momentum for the Golden Knights.
In the next set, sophomore middle hitter
Alex Gagliano followed a Southern Connecticut State attack error with three consecutive kills that turned a 10-10 deadlock into a 14-10 Saint Rose lead that it would not relinquish. Then in the fifth, a kill by senior middle hitter
Chelsea Tyler followed by a service ace and a kill from Kahrs spearheaded a 7-0 Golden Knights spurt that yielded a 14-7 Saint Rose advantage out of a 7-7 tie.
Up ahead, both teams have league dates on tap for 7:00 pm Tuesday. The Golden Knights will host American International in a match that will be streamed live on
www.gogoldenknights.tv. The Owls on the other hand will travel to Worcester, MA to face Assumption.
