NEW HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose softball team suffered a pair of setbacks today as host University of New Haven swept a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader in what marked the league-opener for both clubs. The Chargers took game one 5-1 and then walked away with a 5-3 triumph in game two.
Sophomore designated player
Michelle Schroll went 2-for-3 in the opener behind a pair of singles to lead the Golden Knights (4-9/0-2 NE-10). Schroll's RBI single in the top of the seventh plated freshman first baseman Valerie Nelson, who walked two batters earlier.
The top three batters in the New Haven Lineup combined to go 8-for-11 with four runs and a like number of RBI. That provided plenty of support for sophomore right-hander Alana Wesche, who scattered five hits and recorded eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work.
In the nightcap, Saint Rose erased a 2-0 deficit by pushing across three runs in the top of the fourth. Sophomore right fielder
Rosalie Serra provided the big boost with a two-run single. The Golden Knights also took advantage of an error by the Chargers to grab a 3-2 lead.
New Haven (12-3/2-0 NE-10) responded with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to close out the scoring. Again, most of the damage was done in the top-third of the order. Senior left fielder Chelsea Harold, freshman second baseman Brandy Dianno and sophomore shortstop Christina Gelardi were a combined 7-for-12 with five runs.
Serra and junior third baseman
Jessica Butterbrodt paced the Saint Rose attack. Serra wound up 2-for-3 with the aforementioned two RBI, while Butterbrodt finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a double.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights return to action Tuesday when they host Pace University in their 2011 home-opener. Game one of the league twin-bill is scheduled for 3:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Chargers are back at home tomorrow for an NE-10 doubleheader versus Le Moyne College at noon.
