SAINT ROSE HAS NCAA RUN HALTED AT BENTLEY

Freshman forward Dominykas Milka had 12 points in 24 minutes off the bench during tonight's setback at Bentley.
WALTHAM, MA – The College of Saint Rose got off to a slow start and never really recovered in a 76-63 setback to top-seed and host Bentley in an NCAA Tournament East Regional semifinal tonight at the Dana Athletic Center.

Bentley will now meet Bloomfield in Tuesday's regional semifinal. Tip-off is set for 8:30 pm at Bentley. The seventh-seed Deacons advanced with a 79-66 victory against third-seed Stonehill earlier this evening.

The Golden Knights walked in the locker room down 19, 41-22, at the break. Saint Rose shot just 28.6 percent (8-for-28) from the floor, while the Falcons connected at a 56.0 percent (14-for-25) clip, including 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from the arc. Despite its poor shooting, Saint Rose was within eight, 19-11, midway through the period; but the Falcons gradually boosted their advantage and Quinn knocked down two 3-pointers in the final 35 seconds to put Bentley in control at halftime.

Saint Rose was then never able to get any closer than 15 points at any juncture in the second half although the team had to do without its leading scorer in junior first-team All-Conference guard Rob Gutierrez who was whistled for three consecutive fouls, including his fifth with 16:00 minutes remaining.

Junior forward Brian Hanuschak led the Golden Knights (22-9) with 16 points and seven rebounds. Freshman forward Dominykas Milka tossed in 12 points, one shy of his season high, and hauled in seven caroms during 24 minutes of reserve duty. Gutierrez wound up with 10 points and six boards in just 23 minutes of playing time.

As for Bentley, senior guard Tom Dowling tossed in a game-high 21 points, while senior forward Brian Tracey and senior guard Mike Quinn finished with 11 each.

The Falcons (24-7) wound up shooting 48.9 percent (23-for-47) from the floor, 40.0 percent (8-for-20) from the arc, and buried all 22 of their free throw opportunities. They also generated 21 points off of 13 Saint Rose turnovers.

Despite the outcome, 2010-11 proved to be a banner year for the Golden Knights who are expected to return 12 letterwinners and all five starters next season. They won 20 games for the third time in the past five campaigns and made their 12th NCAA Tournament trip throughout their 20-year NCAA era. They have furthermore now earned a postseason berth in each of head coach Brian Beaury's 25 years at the helm.
