ALBANY – Senior forward
Amy Voelkel buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key with two seconds left and The College of Saint Rose outscored visiting Pace 9-2 in overtime to chalk up a 67-60 victory in a Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinal game tonight.
Fourth-seed Saint Rose (21-6) will now visit top-seed and 17th ranked Bentley (23-4) for a semifinal encounter on Friday at 7:00 pm in Waltham, MA. The Falcons advanced with an 83-61 victory tonight against visiting Southern New Hampshire. The league championship game is scheduled for Sunday, March 6 at the site of the highest remaining seed. As for tonight, Pace appeared to be in control in the final minute of regulation after senior guard Lisa Welsome finished off a drive while being fouled to make it a 56-55 ballgame with 1:08 showing on the clock.
Junior forward Maral Javadifar then came up with a steal at the other end and subsequently rebounded sophomore forward Brittany Shields' missed 3-pointer from the offensive glass. Javadifar then fed sophomore guard Allison Cleary who scored a layup to put Pace up three, 58-55, with 13 seconds left.
The Setters called timeout and appeared to have prevented the Golden Knights from getting a good look, but Saint Rose junior guard
Ashley Rath found Voelkel up top and the latter hit nothing but net to force an improbable extra five minutes.
The Golden Knights wound up putting four players in double-figures scoring for the eighth time this year en route to their seventh straight victory, the longest such streak in the NE-10.
Junior forward
Ali Johnson went 7-for-7 from the floor on the way to a game-high 18 points. Voelkel wound up with a “double-double” behind 12 points and 10 rebounds. She also handed out three assists and came up with a like number of steals. Rath finished with 12 points and five assists, while senior guard
Lynsey Timbrouck added 10 points.
Shields led Pace (22-8) with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Javadifar added a dozen points and five boards.
The game was close throughout with 11 ties and nine lead changes; and neither team led by more than four points throughout regulation. The Setters outrebounded the Golden Knights by a 15-9 margin on the offensive glass, but generated only 10 seconds chance points as opposed to 11 by Saint Rose.
Saint Rose will be making its fifth NE-10 semifinal appearance throughout its 11-year tenure in the league. The Golden Knights last advanced this far in 2009 when they lost a 65-63 heartbreaker at none other than Bentley.
