GARDEN CITY, NY – The College of Saint Rose pulled away from host Northeast-10 Conference rival Adelphi throughout the final eight minutes en route to a 75-62 victory at the Center for Recreation and Sport this evening. The Golden Knights (16-7/11-7 NE-10) put four players in double-figures scoring for the 11th time this year and shot a staggering 97.2 percent (35-for-36) from the foul line to secure their third straight win.
Saint Rose is now tied for fifth in the 16-team NE-10 with UMass Lowell, which was idle.
Junior guard
Shea Bromirski scored 16 of his 24 points after halftime and added five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals to pace Saint Rose. Fellow junior guard
Rob Gutierrez tossed in 18 points, while junior forward
Brian Hanuschak was just shy of a “double-double” with 14 points and nine boards. Sophomore guard
Andre Pope rounded out the quartet of twin-figure scorers with a dozen points.
Saint Rose trailed for the only time since the opening two minutes, 48-47, after Adelphi senior forward Richard Byrd hit a jumper with 8:12 remaining in the second stanza that brought the Panthers back from a 16 point, 39-23, halftime deficit.
However, Bromirski buried a long 3-pointer that sparked a 10-3 surge, which Hanuschak capped with a conventional three point play that made it 57-50 Saint Rose with 5:54 to play. Four minutes later, Hanuschak punctuated the victory with a dunk that put the Golden Knights ahead by 10, 67-57, with 1:20 left.
In the meantime, Saint Rose went 14-for-14 from the foul line and held Adelphi to 28.6 percent (2-for-7) shooting from the floor during the final five minutes.
Byrd paced Adelphi with 18 points, while junior guard Rob Johnson scored 13 and sophomore forward Bradley Simpson added nine.
Looking ahead, both squads have 3:30 pm league dates on tap for Saturday. The Golden Knights will host Pace University, while the Panthers have a meeting at Assumption College in Worcester, MA.
