SAINT ROSE HOLDS DOWN ADELPHI

Junior forward Ali Johnson scored 18 points to lead Saint Rose past NE-10 rival Adelphi tonight.
GARDEN CITY, NY – The College of Saint Rose held host Adelphi to 19 second half points and wrapped a pair of runs around an Adelphi spurt throughout the final 20 minutes to upend the host Panthers 54-46 in a Northeast-10 Conference tilt tonight at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Junior forward Ali Johnson scored a game-high 18 points, on 7-for-12 shooting, and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Golden Knights (16-6/12-6 NE-10) to their sixth win in their last eight outings. Junior guard Ashley Rath tossed in 17 points on the strength of five 3-pointers, while senior forward Amy Voelkel posted a “double-double” via 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Saint Rose went into the locker room at the break with a 30-27 advantage that swelled to a 13 point, 42-29, cushion after Rath drained a trey with 14:03 remaining. The Golden Knights then lost their shooting touch, which allowed Adelphi to score 10 unanswered points and thus get back to within three, 42-39, at the 9:37 mark.

However, Rath came through again with a 3-pointer that sparked a 10-0 jaunt and subsequently put the Golden Knights in control, 52-39, with 2:47 showing on the clock.

After Rath buried her aforementioned 3-pointer, the Panthers went six minutes without scoring. Meanwhile, Johnson hit a free throw and then scored on a layup, Voelkel finished inside, and Johnson knocked down two more from the stripe to make it a 13 point ballgame.

Adelphi was only able to manage a pair of perfunctory field goals down the stretch that merely narrowed the final margin to less than double-digits.

The Golden Knights received another solid outing from senior guard Lynsey Timbrouck who pulled down six rebounds and handed out five assists to run her school record total to 556.

Freshman forwards Jessica Kitrys and Ashley O'Connell led Adelphi. Kitrys had 14 points and six rebounds, while O'Connell contributed 13 points during 16 minutes of reserve duty.

Looking ahead, both squads have 1:30 pm league dates on tap for Saturday. The Golden Knights will host Pace University, while the Panthers have a meeting at Assumption College in Worcester, MA.
