ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose opened the second half with 14 unanswered points and buried 60.0 percent (12-for-20) of its shots throughout the period to upend visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival American International 58-44 this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. In the process, the Golden Knights (15-6/11-6 NE-10) snapped a mild two-game slide and ran their home record to 7-1 on the year.
Senior forward
Amy Voelkel scored 11 of her season-high 15 points after halftime and also hauled in seven rebounds, all from the defensive glass, to pace Saint Rose. Junior guard
Ashley Rath tossed in 12 points, while senior guard
Lynsey Timbrouck wound up with nine points, six boards and four assists.
The Golden Knights trailed 21-18 at intermission after shooting a mere 25.0 percent (7-for-28) during the opening stanza. Rath then finished a fast break to open the second half and Voelkel knocked down a jumper to put Saint Rose ahead to stay, 22-21, with 18:25 remaining. After junior forward
Ali Johnson scored in the paint, Rath ran off seven consecutive points herself that she capped with a 3-pointer to make it a 32-21 affair with 14:49 to go.
The Yellow Jackets (15-7/11-6) eventually whittled their deficit to three, 38-35, after junior guard Marie Li Sicard converted a traditional three-point play with 8:17 remaining.
However, Timbrouck and sophomore forward
Emily Trapp both canned a pair of free throws to push the Saint Rose advantage back to seven, 42-35, a minute later.
The Golden Knights were never really threatened again. They then closed it out by going 9-for-10 from the foul throughout the final three minutes.
Junior guard
Ola Shajuyigbe added eight points and four assists, while Trapp finished with seven points and a like number of rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench to help the Saint Rose cause.
Senior guard Adrianna Johnson paced American International with 16 points. Junior forward Rhea Pascal had 12 points and eight caroms, while Li Sicard added 11 points.
Looking ahead, both teams have 5:30 pm conference road dates ahead of them. The Golden Knights will travel to Long Island for a meeting Wednesday at Adelphi, while the Yellow Jackets will head west on the Thruway Tuesday for a date at Le Moyne in Syracuse.
